We are very proud of Dr. Robert Mitchell aka “Bobby Mitchell” and wanted to share this great article about Bobby Mitchell and his teammate, Freddie Steinmark in “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football”. Any discussion of “The Game of the Century” is incomplete without mention of The Wheat Ridge boys- Longhorns Freddie Steinmark and Bobby Mitchell, whose lives were forever changed in 1969 for reasons well beyond football.
The Big Shootout: Steinmark and Mitchell
by Texas Football Staff
In the absence of a foolproof recipe for building a championship team, we rely on the genius of coaches to know which ingredients will come together to reach destiny.
For Darrell Royal, two of the most important components of his 1969 title team came from one of the least-likely places: tiny Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
Freddie Steinmark and Bobby Mitchell were the talk of the Greater Denver area once they teamed up in the Wheat Ridge backfield after Mitchell’s family moved in from California. Their running styles complemented each other perfectly, turning the boys into stars whose local popularity was once compared to The Beatles by author Jim Dent, who wrote a book about Steinmark that is being developed into a movie.
Their arrival at the University of Texas in 1967 found the Longhorns in a quagmire of piling up four losses or more in three consecutive seasons. Royal moved the high school backfield mates to opposite sides of the ball- Steinmark to safety, Mitchell to the offensive line- where both would become major contributors.
After a sophomore year in 1968 that saw Steinmark become one of the resurgent Longhorns’ defensive stars by intercepting five passes, the Wheat Ridge boys had high aspirations for 1969- a year that would mark great triumph and great tragedy for both.
In January, Bobby received word that his older brother, Mark, an Army helicopter pilot, had been killed in action in Vietnam. Though the loss stung mightily both then and today for Mitchell, he was comforted by Steinmark and channeled his energy into winning a starting job at offensive guard that spring.
As the 1969 season began, Steinmark began to feel an increasing amount of pain in his left leg. Though noticeably hobbled, he continued to play through the pain as the Longhorns claimed victory after victory in their march toward a championship.
With the approach of the showdown with Arkansas, both players had reason to be nervous beyond the usual big-game jitters. With President Nixon attending the game, Vietnam War protesters made sure their voice would be heard among the hoopla of the game- providing a chilling reminder to Mitchell of his recent loss. He would also be playing in front of his girlfriend, Honor Franklin, an Arkansas student. Steinmark, on the other hand, just wanted to be able to endure the pain in his leg for one more game.
While Texas’ 15-14 victory was the beginning of the legendary status of many of the people involved with the game, it would mark the final football game in the life of Freddie Steinmark. Late in the game, he finally succumbed to the pain he’d played through all year and came out of the contest. Six days later, it was discovered he had bone cancer. His left leg was amputated, and he stood on the sideline using crutches when the Longhorns defeated Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day, 1970. Just over a year later, in June of 1971, Steinmark passed away at the age of 22.
Mitchell, who would earn all-SWC honors for the Longhorns in 1970, went on to marry his Razorback girlfriend and become a successful dentist in Dallas.

Using Proven Techniques and Modern Technology for Outstanding Dental Care
We want you to enjoy your visit to our Dallas dental office. Dr. Mitchell uses state-of-the-art equipment and provides deluxe amenities to promote a positive experience. From educational tools that help you make informed decisions about your care to proven anesthesia methods that calm fears and foster successful treatment, we bring you the best of modern dentistry.
Educational Tools
During your checkup or new patient exam, we’ll take pictures inside your mouth with an intraoral camera and display them on a chairside monitor. Getting the same view of your oral health that Dr. Mitchell does helps you to become an informed partner in your dental care. These images, along with short videos from our CAESY Patient Education System, provide a wealth of information to help you decide which therapies will achieve your dental goals and fit your budget and schedule.
Digital images or a wax model of your smile altered to show the proposed effects of proposed therapies can also help you decide which treatments to pursue.
Digital Dentistry
We use digital X-rays to give us a comprehensive picture of your oral health. Digital radiography emits about 80% less radiation than a traditional X-ray, making it safer for you and earth-friendly. In addition, digital X-rays are instantly available for viewing on chairside monitors and can be sent electronically to insurance companies and specialists. Our digital Panorex machine provides a two-dimensional view of your entire oral cavity, aiding in efficient and thorough diagnoses.
Modern Diagnostics – DIAGNOdent and Velscope
State-of-the-art diagnostic tools have revolutionized dentistry. At your checkup or new patient exam, we will use a DIAGNOdent instead of a dental hook to check the health of your teeth. DIAGNOdent is a non-invasive laser that gently and efficiently locates areas of demineralization, the precursor to a cavity. Because DIAGNOdent provides early detection of decay, we can preserve more of your natural tooth when restoring it to health.
Our oral cancer screening tool is called Velscope. This life-saving technology uses a stream of light to locate suspicious mouth lesions that require follow-up. Oral cancer is a stealthy, destructive disease that’s often not caught until it has spread to the neck or lymph nodes. Early detection greatly improves survival chances, so we will screen your for oral cancer during your new patient exam and subsequent checkups.
Sedation Dentistry
Many people fear dentists and dental procedures. It’s a common phobia, but one that can be overcome. Dr. Mitchell uses sedation dentistry to calm nerves and promote a comfortable experience. We offer intravenous (IV) sedation, oral conscious sedation, as well as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Dr. Mitchell will help you determine which method is right for you.
Amenities
Your comfort is important to us. While in our care, you’ll enjoy a variety of amenities. Refreshments are provided for your enjoyment, as are music headphones, movie goggles, massagers, blankets, and pillows. We also offer Netflix, Pandora Radio, and hot lavender towels after treatment.
On your big day, you want to look perfect. Submit your email, and Like or Follow one of our social accounts to be entered for a chance to win a whitening and Smile Makeover consultation for your wedding! The winner must come into the office before 10/31/16 to claim their offer.

Creating Beautiful, Durable Smiles with Custom-Made Crowns in Dallas, Texas.
*Actual Patient
A damaged or severely worn tooth can mar your appearance and cause discomfort. Left untreated, the problem will only worsen and could result in an awkwardly broken tooth, acute pain, or a diseased tooth root. Let Dr. Mitchell restore structural integrity to your compromised dentition with a custom crown, inlay, or onlay.
A crown sits snugly atop a compromised tooth to strengthen and protect it. Dr. Mitchell uses all-ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and gold crowns for durable, long-lasting restorations. He’ll consider the location of your tooth and the amount of stress it incurs to determine which material to use. Porcelain crowns look and feel like natural teeth, so they’ll blend seamlessly into your smile.
Typically, we can design, fit, and place your crowns in just a couple of short appointments. The procedure for installing a dental crown normally takes two separate dentist visits. At your first appointment, Dr. Mitchell will examine the tooth to make sure that it can support a crown, then begin shaping the tooth to prepare it for the crown. Alternatively, if the tooth is severely damaged or broken, Dr. Mitchell may need to fill it in to make it large enough to properly receive the crown. After the tooth is prepped to the proper shape, Dr. Mitchell will take an impression of the tooth, as well as those surrounding it, and send it away to a dental lab, so the permanent crown can be made accordingly. By the end of this first visit, your tooth will have a new temporary crown that protects it until the final crown is ready to be permanently placed.
When the permanent crown is ready, you will have your second visit. At this appointment, the temporary crown is removed, Dr. Mitchell will position and fasten the new crown to the tooth with a special permanent adhesive.
Once a crown is placed, you can care for it as you do your natural teeth. Conscientious brushing twice a day and daily flossing will protect the base of your crown from bacterial growth. Be sure to see us at least two times each year for professional cleanings and a preventive exam, too. If you have any questions please call 972-233-1311 we would love to set up a consultation for Dr. Mitchell or one of our knowledgeable staff members to go over the process with you in more detail.

Outstanding Care for a Lifetime of Optimal Oral Health. We’ll dedicate two hours for your new patient exam. When you arrive, we’ll give you a tour of our dental office and introduce you to our team. Refreshments are available for your enjoyment, as are Bose music headphones, movie goggles, massagers, and comfortable blankets, hot and cold neck pillows, and warm, scented towels.
Assessing Your Teeth, Gums, and Bite
We will talk to you about your dental needs and the reason for your visit. Then Dr. Mitchell will conduct a thorough exam which will include checking your bite alignment, assessing the integrity of existing dental work, and scanning your teeth for decay using our non-invasive DIAGNOdent laser. About 80% of the population unknowingly has some form of periodontal disease, so we will examine your gums for signs of this stealthy offender and suggest therapies for prevention or treatment. A set of digital X-rays will provide a complete picture of your oral health and aid in accurate diagnosis.
Screening for Oral Cancer
We will check your soft tissues for signs of oral cancer. We use a state-of-the-art tool called Velscope to identify suspicious lesions in the earliest stages. Oral cancer claims the lives of 7,500 Americans each year and often goes undetected until it has spread to the neck and lymph nodes. Early detection increases survival chances, so we will screen you for oral cancer at your new patient exam and subsequent checkups.

If you’re self-conscious about cracked, broken, decayed, or worn teeth, we can bring back your healthy, natural-looking smile with dental crowns, also called caps. A crown can return structure, strength, and function to a tooth with extensive decay or damage. Designed to fit snugly and function as a healthy tooth, a crown will protect your tooth from further damage and preserve the jaw’s correct natural alignment.
We use precious metal, porcelain pressed (or fused) to metal, or all-porcelain crowns. To maintain a fully white smile, we recommend all-ceramic crowns. Our precise color-matching system allows us to find the right shade of porcelain to blend with your natural tooth color. Porcelain crowns are also extremely durable and long lasting, and these benefits make them popular with dentists as well as patients.
