How to freshen your breath for National Dental Hygiene Month
October 9, 2013
Did you know October is National Dental Hygiene Month? It’s the perfect time to spruce up your smile and get fresh breath. Think of it as a tune up for your teeth!
Maintaining a bright smile is not the only concern when it comes to a healthy mouth. Your breath can be a warning sign that something is off – or that you had onions for lunch. Dr. Robert Mitchell is here to share his top tips on How to freshen your breath for National Dental Hygiene Month.
1. Brush Twice a Day
Most people find it’s easiest to do right when you wake up and before hitting the sheets.
2. Floss Daily
Keep a container of floss where you end up sitting the most. Your nightstand, coffee table or desk can be great spots!
3. Clean Your Tongue
A quick scrub with your toothbrush while you are brushing your teeth should be all that you need!
4. Drink Water
Water is a great way to give your mouth a quick rinse, in addition to keeping your body hydrated. When your mouth gets dry, the bacteria in your mouth just sits around waiting to be rinsed away.
5. Watch What You Eat
Be careful what you are eating. A high protein, low carbohydrate diet may be great for your waist size, but it can cause your body to burn fat instead of sugar which is known to cause stinky breath.
6. Go green.
Green tea and green herbs are great for reducing bad breath. Munch some during the day to temporarily freshen breath.
7. Consume More Vitamin C
Vitamin C is not only the ultimate cold fighter. Foods high in Vitamin C can also reduce the appearance of bad breath. Try melons, berries and citrus fruits.

Five Tooth-Friendly Lunch Ideas for You and Your Children
September 16, 2013
You’ve bought the crayons, pencils and notebooks. New jeans and tennis shoes? Check. Met with the teacher? Check. Back to school season brings with it mile-long supply lists and a bevy of paperwork, tasks and chores, right? The last thing busy parents want to think about is packing a healthy lunch for their little ones and themselves.
And yet, we all know how important healthy meals are to healthy children – and healthy teeth! The most common chronic childhood disease is tooth decay and 51 million school hours are lost annually due to dental-related illnesses, so we need to consider what we’re feeding our kids.
We are here to help! At Dr. Robert Mitchell’s Dallas office, we love exploring all of the ways we can help make life easier, while thinking about how to help you have YOUR best smile.
A balanced diet is a critical element of dental health no matter what your age so consider your family’s teeth when packing the brown bags this fall and include the following smile-friendly items:
- Sandwiches made with whole grain bread and packed with protein-rich foods like chicken or turkey to help teeth build enamel
- Produce like celery, carrots and apples, which act like a toothbrush by massaging gums and helping to eliminate bad bacteria
- Calcium-rich foods like low-fat milk, yogurt and string cheese, which keep teeth and the jaw bone strong and protected against tooth decay
- Red peppers and oranges packed with Vitamin C to help strengthen blood vessels and connective tissue in the gums
- Hard-boiled eggs and tuna fish to aid in the absorption of calcium and protein
Of course, brushing after each meal is recommended but isn’t always possible at school or work. In lieu of brushing, be sure you AND your child rinse your mouth with water for a minute after eating to help loosen any food that may be stuck in the teeth.

The New Super Food: Health Benefits of Chia Seeds
June 25, 2013
What do you think of when you hear about chia seeds? If you are thinking about those popular Chia Pets from the 1980s, you aren’t alone. But chia seeds have been reborn as a super food, popping up in smoothies, salads and other healthy – and tooth-friendly – treats! And even though today’s health food is from the same family as those used on the terra-cotta planters –please don’t eat your Chia Pet seeds. They are not for consumption and the chia seeds you find in your health food store are sold under much stricter standards.
While to the average American, eating chia seeds seems like a new concept, the ancient Aztecs, Mayans and Incas included them in their diets. So what did they know that we are now just learning?
Health Benefits
- Support digestion, boost energy, stabilize blood sugar and reduce cholesterol
- Significant amount of soluble fiber
- Excellent source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids
- Full of antioxidants
- A 28-gram serving has 4.4 grams of protein
- Source of calcium
How to Eat Chia Seeds
If you are ready to start adding chia seeds to your diet, we can help. They can be sprinkled on yogurt, salads or even toast. Concerned about getting the tiny seeds stuck in your teeth? Our experts at Dr. Robert Mitchell’s office have some suggestions for eating chia seeds that are good for your body AND teeth and gums.
One of the best ways to avoid getting chia seeds stuck in your teeth is to buy it them in ground – or milled — form. The milled seeds can be added to just about anything, from your favorite smoothie to sauces and soups. Whole chia seeds will take on a gelatin-like consistency when added to water. This makes a great egg substitute for vegan recipes.
Pick up chia seeds at your favorite health food store and try this super food. A diet of whole, fresh and nutritious foods is sure to lead to a healthier smile!

Zylitol: How to beat sugar cravings and cure YOUR sweet tooth
June 4, 2013
Are you constantly battling that sugar craving after every meal? Sugar can be very detrimental to your teeth, as well as your overall health. Standing up to that craving can be tough.
Luckily, there is a safe, natural sweetener that can be used. Xylitol is a natural sweetener. It looks and feels just like regular white sugar, but it is extracted from any woody fibrous plant.
Xylitol has been used regularly since the 1960s and not only because of its cavity-fighting capabilities. Xylitol also is proven to show relief in nasal congestion, according to Xylitol.org. The results are proven when it is consumed three to five times a day, which means – eat up!
In more recent years, manufacturers have started to create many products with xylitol. Here are just a few you might find in your neighborhood grocery store:
- Spry Mints
- Xlear Nasal Spray
- Ricochet Candies
- Ice Breakers
- Trident
With so many different ways to incorporate xylitol in your daily diet, how will you do it? Dr. Robert Mitchell recommends xylitol as a great way to replace your daily amount of sugar and help fight cavities. Learn Risks and Our Screening Process during April’s Oral Cancer Awareness Month
April 23, 2013
April can bring many things: Rain, flowers and warmer weather. But it can also bring about discussions of a more serious topic: Oral cancer awareness. Here at Dr. Robert Mitchell’s Dallas dental practice, we are working this month – and every month – to raise awareness.
During the month of April, dental professionals around the world work to raise awareness of this illness — the sixth most common cancer.
The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with some form of oral cancer in 2013. About 8,000 people will die of oral cancer.
While scientists do not know the exact cause of oral cancer, research shows heavy use of tobacco products and alcohol consumption, HPV (human papilloma virus) and excessive sun exposure could increase your risk.
Because oral cancer is usually not diagnosed in its early stages, less than half of all oral cancer patients are cured. In fact, of all major cancers, oral cancer has the worst five-year survival rate at about 57 percent.
But there is some good news: If detected during the early stages, the survival rate jumps to 80 percent or more.
At Dr. Robert Mitchell’s dental office, we strive to educate our Dallas patients of the risks associated with this illness. We offer oral cancer screenings to our patients. During this exam, Dr. Mitchell feels for lumps or irregular tissues, changes in your neck, head, cheeks and oral cavity. He will also thoroughly examine the soft tissues in your mouth, looking for any sores or discolored tissues. If oral cancer is suspected, a biopsy will be ordered to confirm the diagnosis.
Early detection is key and regular dental check-ups can literally save your life. If you haven’t visited us recently, be sure to schedule an appointment today.
For more information on oral cancer screenings, call Dr. Robert Mitchell’s office!
