Cosmetic Bonding in Dallas, TX

December 22, 2015

If you have a chipped, slightly misaligned, or otherwise imperfect tooth that needs cosmetic restoration, we may suggest one-appointment bonding. Dr. Mitchell can apply liquid composite resin that’s been shaded to blend with your tooth’s color in order to rebuild a pleasing shape to your tooth. After hardening the resin with a curing light, he will artistically sculpt and polish the restoration. In just one visit, you can enjoy a beautiful new smile! Cosmetic bonding can be a viable, affordable alternative to porcelain veneers, but it lasts only 5 to 10 years with proper care. Bonding will not discolor as your natural tooth enamel will, so touch-up teeth whitening may be required to keep your natural teeth the same shade as the bonded area.

5 Early Warning Signs Of Bad Breath

December 14, 2015

According to the Bad Breath Report here are the 5 Early Warning Signs of Bad Breath:

1. Bad Breath In The Mornings

An image of a man with bad breath talking to a woman.

You’ve noticed that you have bad breath in the mornings. Many people do, in face, probably most do so you don’t need to feel bad about that. A simple brushing of teeth and a gargle of some nice minty mouthwash will usually clear things up pretty quickly.

2. Bad Breath Between Meal Times

Getting bad breath a few hours after eating can mean that you didn’t brush your teeth or that you’ve been sipping on some sweetened beverage. Your mouth could have dried out and now the food or sugar left over on the back of the tongue is starting to come alive, feeding all kinds of funky bacteria. Washing it all down with water and continuing to keep the mouth moist will prevent this. Brushing the teeth after eating will be a definite plus.

3. Bad Breath After Eating Garlic

Eating garlic or any other food that has a potent odor of its own is guaranteed to give you bad breath. This is something you must plan on and would probably be wise to stay away from foods like that when you know you will need to have a nice breath, or you will be somewhere on planet Earth where there are other people. In an emergency all you need to do is brush your teeth, gargle some mouthwash and pop a gun im the mouth. This will cut the kick out of the odor and give you a chance to excuse your self without making anyone pass out.

4. I Smell it But Others Say It’s Not There

Situations like this will happen to the best of us. Worrying about bad breath when it really is not there is a psychological thing and needs to be dealt with on the psychological level. If your peeps are telling you that your breath smells fine but you continue to smell some funk, it is probably just in your head. Trust your friends and just believe.

5. Bad Breath Even After Brushing Teeth

There are people with serious conditions that really need to be concerned about and probably have a dentist or a doctor take a look at. When you have bad breath all the time and nothing you do seems to really get rid of it, there may be some more serious issues that need to be dealt with.

A lot of people will have bad breath and will start worrying about it going to the dentist and seeing specialists when all they need to do is form some good habits and start taking care of their oral hygiene a little better. Majority of people with bad breath will not need medical attention but only their own.

Missing Teeth are a serious concern. Dallas Dentist recommends Dental Implants for Restoring Smile

Dallas Dentist Recommends Dental Implants for Restoring Smile.

Missing teeth are a serious concern. An incomplete smile undermines your confidence, keeps you from eating the crunchy and chewy foods you love, and puts you at risk for serious health complications. Dr. Mitchell restores oral comfort, function, and appearance with custom-made dental implants.

Many people prefer dental implants to dentures because of their completely natural look and feel. Dental implants are a permanent addition to your smile, so you’ll never need to use adhesive or worry about slippage. If you have sufficient bone tissue and good oral health, implants might be right for you.

An oral surgeon will place tiny titanium posts in your jaw, one for each dental implant or a few to anchor a bridge, partial, or denture. Dr. Mitchell will oversee the entire process, then create and place your custom restorations in our office.

According to the ADA Dental Implants are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.

Implants:

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. In fact, the development and use of implants is one of the biggest advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. Dental implants are made up of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. They are posts that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth.

Most patients find that a dental implant is secure, stable and a good replacement for their own tooth. There are generally three phases to getting an implant:

  • First, the dentist surgically places the implant into the jawbone. Your dentist may recommend a diet of soft foods, cold foods and warm soup during the healing process.
  • Next, the bone around the implant heals in a process called osseointegration. What makes an implant so strong is that the bone actually grows around it and holds it in place. Osseointegration means “combines with the bone” and takes time. Some patients might need to wait until the implant is completely integrated, up to several months, before replacement teeth can be attached to the implant. Other patients can have the implants and replacement teeth placed all in one visit.
  • Finally, it’s time for the placement of the artificial tooth/teeth. For a single tooth implant, your dentist will customize a new tooth for you, called a dental crown. The crown will be based on size, shape, color and fit, and will be designed to blend in with your other teeth. If you are replacing more than a single tooth, custom-made bridges or dentures will be made to fit your mouth and your implants. (Note: The replacement teeth usually take some time to make. In the meantime, your dentist may give you a temporary crown, bridge or denture to help you eat and speak normally until the permanent replacement is ready.)

If you are interested in dental implants, it’s a good idea to discuss it carefully with your dentist first. If you are in good general health this treatment may be an option for you. In fact, your health is more of a factor than your age. You may be medically evaluated by a physician before any implant surgery is scheduled.

Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or leukemia, may interfere with healing after surgery. Patients with these issues may not be good candidates for implants. Using tobacco can also slow healing.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Every day, your teeth get a thorough workout. While the top layers are made of durable enamel and dentin, they can become discolored by wine, tea, coffee, or tobacco. Even medication, antibiotics, excessive fluoride, and aging can cause stains and discoloration.

Although you will find a vast variety of over-the-counter home teeth whitening products on the market, the professional Zoom! Whitening system elicits far greater results. If you want whiter teeth, ask us about Zoom! Whitening today. First you’ll need a thorough examination so we can tell you if this is the right teeth whitening system for you.

The Zoom! Whitening Process

Dr. Mitchell uses Zoom! Whitening to lighten smiles up to eight shades in about an hour. Alleviating Anxiety with Safe, Comfortable Sedation Dentistry in Dallas

November 16, 2015

10443457_669627036424215_2135968242268328467_nAlleviating Anxiety with Safe, Comfortable Sedation Dentistry

Fear of the dentist is common, but it needn’t prevent you from achieving a strong, healthy smile. Dr. Mitchell uses sedation dentistry to alleviate anxiety and promote a positive dental care experience. He offers oral conscious sedation as well as intravenous (IV) sedation. Both methods are safe, effective and have been used by millions of people to achieve strong, beautiful smiles. Come in for a consultation, and we’ll help you determine if sedation dentistry is right for you.

If you fear going to the dentist, you are not alone. Between 9% and 20% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety or fear. Indeed, it is a universal phenomenon.

Dental phobia is a more serious condition than anxiety. It leaves people panic-stricken and terrified. People with dental phobia have an awareness that the fear is totally irrational, but are unable to do much about it. They exhibit classic avoidance behavior; that is, they will do everything possible to avoid going to the dentist. People with dental phobia usually go to the dentist only when forced to do so by extreme pain. Pathologic anxiety or phobia may require psychiatric consultation in some cases.

Other signs of dental phobia include:

  • Trouble sleeping the night before the dental exam
  • Feelings of nervousness that escalate while in the dental office waiting room
  • Crying or feeling physically ill at the very thought of visiting the dentist
  • Intense uneasiness at the thought of, or actually when, objects are placed in your mouth during the dental treatment or suddenly feeling like it is difficult to breathe

Sedation Dentistry Options:

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you qualify for oral conscious sedation, Dr. Mitchell will prescribe a sedative for you to take prior to your appointment. You’ll feel groggy, so please have a friend or family member drive you to and from our office. After you enter a state of deep relaxation, Dr. Mitchell will perform your dental work and potentially reverse years of damage or neglect in a single visit. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, may be used to enhance sedation. Your oral conscious sedation will wear off gradually and leave you with only pleasant memories of your time with us.

IV Sedation

Dr. Mitchell may suggest IV sedation to ease apprehension and calm patients who require time-consuming treatments, have a sensitive gag reflex, or suffer from conditions that prevent them from holding their mouths open for long periods of time. Many people prefer IV sedation because they simply fall asleep prior to treatment and awaken with no memory of their procedures. We’ll tailor your level of sedation to your unique needs. Following treatment, you’ll emerge fully from your sedation but will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

Call our North Dallas dental office today to schedule your sedation dentistry consultation with Dr. Mitchell.

Cosmetic Dentist in Dallas TX Can Give You A Beautiful New Smile With Porcelain Veneers

October 20, 2015

Have you always wondered about cosmetic dentistry, but thought maybe it wasn’t for you?

Well, veneers are your answer!  Veneers have come a long way.  They are easy, painless and virtually instant.  In a little as two visits you can have an entirely new smile, or just enhance the one you already love.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a contact-lens-thin custom made shell that covers the front side of the tooth and is bonded on permanently. They are created one-of-a-kind in a laboratory just for you, by a technician.  Veneers are made from exact models of your mouth taken by the dentist.porcelain-veneers-350

It’s about time

There is no reason to live with gaps in your front teeth, stains that won’t come off or crooked, chipped, or misshapen teeth. Today a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct natures mistakes or remove the results of an injury, leaving your teeth looking better than ever and refreshed.

Veneers might be perfect, if you:

  • whiten regularly, but would like a permanent solution
  • are self-conscious of the gaps, chips or crooked teeth in your smile
  • have stains that do not respond to whitening
  • have an upcoming event, like a graduation, wedding, or reunion
  • want the look of a straight smile without the commitment of braces

Veneers require little, if no drilling, and no large time commitment, and deliver gorgeous permanent results.

Just what you want

Many times patients think cosmetic dentistry means an unnatural,  movie-star smile.  They think cosmetic dentistry is not for them because they might not feel like “themselves”.  Today this is just not the case.  Results can range from drastic, to subtle.  With a variety of custom shade, size and shape options, you can get exactly what you want.

Veneers are one of the easiest and fastest ways to change your smile.  Whether you looking for a dramatic or subtle result, veneers can deliver both.  I would love to talk over your options with you at your next visit.  Feel free to ask to see many of the Before and After photos we have in our office of happy patients.

Imagine never having to worry about the appearance of your smile when meeting strangers or taking pictures. Imagine not having to cover your mouth when you laugh. Imagine smiling with full confidence when introducing yourself. All of these possibilities are extremely possible with the help of our professional staff.

With today’s technology and porcelain veneers, Dr. Mitchell can give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Schedule an appointment today for a complimentary consultation visit to see if porcelain veneers are the right option for you.

A strong, healthy smile is something to be treasured. Proper preventive care can keep your teeth and gums looking and feeling great for years to come. As an experienced Dallas Dentist and General Dentist, Dr. Mitchell offers a variety of therapies to maximize oral wellness.

For optimal dental wellbeing, Dr. Mitchell recommends regular, six-month checkups. He may suggest products and techniques to optimize your oral homecare routine. He’ll use state-of-the-art tools (such as Velscope and Digital X-rays) to identify problems like tooth decay and oral cancer. Early diagnosis means timely intervention and treatment, which results in improved oral health. He’ll check your gum tissue for signs of periodontal disease and assess your bite alignment. If you’re an athlete or the parent of one, Dr. Mitchell might suggest a custom mouthguard to prevent sports-related oral injury.

General & Preventive Dentistry Services49bd00bc5d2b424504bff900926e2804

The American Dental Association recommends you see your dentist at least twice each year for a checkup. At your checkup, we will inspect your soft tissues for oral cancer, periodontal disease, and other problems. The dentist will also look at each tooth in your mouth to assess problems like tooth decay or cracks, as well as old dental work. Sometimes old dental work wears out and needs to be replaced. We will be happy to replace metal fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns with tooth-colored alternatives.

By looking for trouble every six months, we can often reduce the potential for large dental problems. For instance, a small cavity can grow to destroy an entire tooth and spread to surrounding teeth if left untreated. A cracked tooth can cause pain or break off and create additional problems. Furthermore, advanced gum disease is the primary cause of tooth loss for American adults, and oral cancer causes more than 7500 deaths each year. Caught and treated early, these diseases can be controlled.

If you have not scheduled a checkup lately, be sure to call us now to make your appointment! Children as young as two should visit the dentist, and by age four or five, they should be attending regular checkups.
