Alleviating Anxiety with Safe, Comfortable Sedation Dentistry in Dallas

November 16, 2015

Fear of the dentist is common, but it needn’t prevent you from achieving a strong, healthy smile. Dr. Mitchell uses sedation dentistry to alleviate anxiety and promote a positive dental care experience. He offers oral conscious sedation as well as intravenous (IV) sedation. Both methods are safe, effective and have been used by millions of people to achieve strong, beautiful smiles. Come in for a consultation, and we’ll help you determine if sedation dentistry is right for you.

If you fear going to the dentist, you are not alone. Between 9% and 20% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety or fear. Indeed, it is a universal phenomenon.

Dental phobia is a more serious condition than anxiety. It leaves people panic-stricken and terrified. People with dental phobia have an awareness that the fear is totally irrational, but are unable to do much about it. They exhibit classic avoidance behavior; that is, they will do everything possible to avoid going to the dentist. People with dental phobia usually go to the dentist only when forced to do so by extreme pain. Pathologic anxiety or phobia may require psychiatric consultation in some cases.

Other signs of dental phobia include:

  • Trouble sleeping the night before the dental exam
  • Feelings of nervousness that escalate while in the dental office waiting room
  • Crying or feeling physically ill at the very thought of visiting the dentist
  • Intense uneasiness at the thought of, or actually when, objects are placed in your mouth during the dental treatment or suddenly feeling like it is difficult to breathe

Sedation Dentistry Options:

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you qualify for oral conscious sedation, Dr. Mitchell will prescribe a sedative for you to take prior to your appointment. You’ll feel groggy, so please have a friend or family member drive you to and from our office. After you enter a state of deep relaxation, Dr. Mitchell will perform your dental work and potentially reverse years of damage or neglect in a single visit. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, may be used to enhance sedation. Your oral conscious sedation will wear off gradually and leave you with only pleasant memories of your time with us.

IV Sedation

Dr. Mitchell may suggest IV sedation to ease apprehension and calm patients who require time-consuming treatments, have a sensitive gag reflex, or suffer from conditions that prevent them from holding their mouths open for long periods of time. Many people prefer IV sedation because they simply fall asleep prior to treatment and awaken with no memory of their procedures. We’ll tailor your level of sedation to your unique needs. Following treatment, you’ll emerge fully from your sedation but will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

Full-Mouth Reconstruction in Dallas, TX

November 6, 2015

Renewing Oral Well-being with Full-Mouth Reconstruction

Dental decay, disease, or trauma can rob you of your treasured smile. We believe that everyone deserves strong teeth and healthy gums. As an experienced general dentist and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Mitchell rebuilds smiles with full-mouth reconstruction.

Dr. Mitchell will thoroughly assess your oral health and develop a plan to renew your smile. He may suggest a variety of general dentistry, preventive dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and/or restorative dentistry treatments. Replacement teeth or Invisalign clear braces may also be involved. Dr. Mitchell will fully explain your options and work with you to determine which therapies are right for you. You can learn additional information about suggested treatment options from watching short videos found in our CAESY Patient Education System and preview your new smile.

When you decide to correct or enhance your smile, it’s often difficult to determine ahead of time exactly what kind of results to expect. After all, a smile is a pretty personal thing, and changing your smile can feel like changing your identity. That’s where cosmetic digital imaging comes into play. Digital imaging is computer software that allows us to take your digital photograph and manipulate it to reflect the procedures you’re considering. The result is a photo that shows you what your smile would look like after treatment. Whether you’re considering teeth whitening, straightening, bonding, veneers, or a complete smile makeover, digital imaging technology lets you see into your future.

The process is quite simple. Once your dentist has completed your oral exam and discussed your smile goals, a treatment plan will be created. Various digital photos of your current smile will be taken and change factors will be keyed into the computer. The computer will immediately generate one or more graphic images that accurately demonstrate how the changes will affect the appearance of your mouth, as well as your overall facial appearance. It’s a fun process, and it can instigate excitement similar to when a sonogram reveals the gender of a new baby. Plus, you can take a photo of the new you home to share with family or friends.

Informed patients make wise decisions, and digital imaging allows you the opportunity to actually glimpse your future before committing to treatment. What more could you ask for?

If you suffer from dental anxiety, Dr. Mitchell can give you a sedative to take prior to treatment so that you can enter a state of deep relaxation, free from fear and pain, during your dental procedure.

Thank you for choosing the office of Dr. Robert Mitchell for your family’s dental care. Our entire team values the opportunity to give you the personalized attention and beautiful, healthy smile you deserve.

We’ll dedicate two hours for your new patient exam. When you arrive, we’ll give you a tour of our dental office and introduce you to our team. Refreshments are available for your enjoyment, as are Bose music headphones, movie goggles, massagers, and comfortable blankets, hot and cold neck pillows, and warm, scented towels.

Assessing Your Teeth, Gums, and Bite

We will talk to you about your dental needs and the reason for your visit. Then Dr. Mitchell will conduct a thorough exam which will include checking your bite alignment, assessing the integrity of existing dental work, and scanning your teeth for decay using our non-invasive DIAGNOdent laser. About 80% of the population unknowingly has some form of periodontal disease, so we will examine your gums for signs of this stealthy offender and suggest therapies for prevention or treatment. A set of digital X-rays will provide a complete picture of your oral health and aid in accurate diagnosis.

Screening for Oral Cancer

We will check your soft tissues for signs of oral cancer. We use a state-of-the-art tool called Velscope to identify suspicious lesions in the earliest stages. Oral cancer claims the lives of 7,500 Americans each year and often goes undetected until it has spread to the neck and lymph nodes. Early detection increases survival chances, so we will screen you for oral cancer at your new patient exam and subsequent checkups.

Resolve to have a Healthier Smile in 2013

January 15, 2013

One of the best ways to get a beautiful, healthy smile is to brush at least twice a day. But what else can you do to improve the health and appearance of your teeth? Here are Dallas cosmetic dentist Dr. Robert Mitchell’s Top 10 resolutions for a healthier smile in 2013!

  1. Eat Healthy Foods: An apple a day keeps cavities away. A balanced diet is the best way to make a healthier you and that includes improving your smile. You can help prevent tooth decay by eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins. Go easy when eating acidic fruits though, like the Texas state fruit, red grapefruit.
  2. Make an Appointment: When was your last dental check-up? You should see your dentist and have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year. This not only cleans teeth of tartar and plaque, but allows for early detection of problems that can ruin a great smile. Even in between visits can be a great time for a whitening treatment!
  3. Get Fit: Happiness and exercise are both linked with a boost to the immune system and with the release of endorphins. Exercise increases energy, gives you a sense of accomplishment when personal fitness goals are met and instills a sense of pride with an improved physical appearance. That’s something to smile about!
  4. Stop Biting Nails: Nail biting not only wreaks havoc on your manicure, but can destroy a beautiful smile. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, nail biting can crack, chip or wear down front teeth.
  5. Help Others: One of the best ways to improve your smile is to bring a smile to others. Make this your year to volunteer and help others.
  6. Quit Smoking: Smoking and tobacco products can ruin your smile by giving you bad breath, stained teeth, difficulties in correcting cosmetic dental problems, gum disease and oral cancer.
  7. Take a Trip: Traveling somewhere wonderful can improve your smile. We recommend our own perfect city: Dallas, of course! But our whole state is a traveler’s paradise, considering it is the 2nd largest state in the U.S.!
  8. Spend More Time with Family and Friends: Work, stress and the daily grind can steal your smile. Get back to what’s important and vow to spend more time with loved ones!
  9. Have Fun: Improve your smile by smiling more. Watch a funny movie, see a comedian or laugh about memories with an old friend!
  10. Chew More Gum: It’s true! Chewing gum can improve your smile, provided it is sugar-free. According to the ADA, research shows that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay.

Dr. Mitchell is hopeful these resolutions improve your smile in 2013! Do you have another resolution or a creative way to achieve your goals in 2013? Share it with us!
